"The Brutalist" and "Emilia Pérez" are the Golden Globes' films of the year

“The Brutalist” won three Golden Globes. Already “Emilia Perez” took home four golden globes. Meet the award winners.

The first major awards ceremony of the year, the distinguished “The Brutalist”, by Brady Corbet, and “Emilia Pérez”, by Jacques Audiard, as the best films of the year, awarding several statuettes to both.

“The Brutalist” was Best Dramatic Film and also won Brady Corbet the Globe for Best Director, with protagonist Adrien Brody winning the Best Actor award in the drama category.

“At the heart of ‘The Brutalist’ is a story about the human capacity for creation,” said Brody, who plays Hungarian architect László Tóth as he flees to the United States after World War II.

Himself the son of a Hungarian woman who fled post-war Europe, Brody was very emotional about the victory, saying he owed a lot to his mother and grandparents for the sacrifice they made.

“I hope this work can uplift you and give you a voice,” he said.

Director Brady Corbet, who twice took to the stage at the Beverly Hilton where the awards were handed out, said winning had a lot of meaning for a film that until a few months ago had everything stacked against it.

“The Brutalist” took more than seven years to make and was with A24 and Warner Bros. which became one of the most rated titles of the year.

“Thank you to everyone who took a chance on this film when it was falling apart,” Corbet said.

The filmmaker used his second trip to the stage to say that the director must have the final say in editing.

“They told me that this film was impossible to distribute, that no one would see it, that it wouldn’t work”, recalled Corbet, about the feature film.

“Films don’t exist without filmmakers, let’s support them (…) Nobody asked for a three and a half hour film about a mid-century designer, but it works.”

French film “Emilia Pérez” was another big winner at the Golden Globes

O Another big winner at the 82nd Golden Globe ceremony was Frenchman Jacques Audiard’s film “Emilia Pérez”a musical spoken primarily in Spanish.

Starring transgender actress Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez, it took home four golden globes: Best Musical or Comedy Film, Best Foreign Language Film, Best Supporting Actress in a film for Zoe Saldaña and Best Original Song, “El Mal “.

“Thank you for celebrating our film and honoring the women of ‘Emilia Pérez,'” said actress Zoe Saldaña, who openly cried during her acceptance speech.

“Karla, no one else could have played Emilia. You are unique”, he said, looking at the actress.

In the final statuette, Jacques Godiard gave the stage to Karla Sofía Gáscon, who took advantage of the moment to leave a message to the world about the transgender community.

“Light always wins over darkness. They can arrest us, beat us, but they can never steal our soul, our existence, our identity (…) Raise your voices and say: I am what I am, not what you want.”

Gascón was nominated in the Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy category, but lost to Demi Moore, who gave one of the longest and most emotional speeches of the night.

“It’s the first time I’ve received anything as an actress”

“I’m in shock,” said the veteran. “I’ve been doing this for 45 years and this is the first time I’ve received anything as an actress,” she highlighted.

Moore interpreta Elisabeth Sparkle em ““, which has one of the most unexpected scripts of the year. The 62-year-old actress accepted this role at a time when she was practically giving up on her career.

“30 years ago, a producer told me I was a popcorn actress,” Moore revealed.

“I perceived that to mean that this was something I couldn’t have, that I could make successful films and a lot of money but not get recognition.”

This idea has been corrosive over the years. “It was when I was at my lowest point that this bold, courageous, out-of-the-box, absolutely crazy argument came to me. The universe told me that I wasn’t finished yet,” Moore revealed.

Other winners

Kieran Culkin won Best Supporting Actor in a film, for “The True Grief” and, in the category of Best Actor in a musical or comedy film, the award went to Sebastian Stan, for “A Different Man”.

The Best Animated Film was “Flow”, a title coming from Latvia, the Best Soundtrack was “Challengers”, while “Conclave”, about the choice of a pope and the mechanics of the Vatican, won Best Screenplay.
