"The country needs a new page": Trudeau resigns as Prime Minister of Canada

UPDATED

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigned this Monday as leader of the Liberal Party, as reported by CNN.

“I intend to resign as leader of the party, as prime minister, after the party chooses its new leader”, announced the 53-year-old head of state, at a press conference at Rideau Cottage, his temporary residence , adding that on Sunday night he asked the president of the Liberal Party to begin the process of choosing a new leader.

Thus, Trudeau will continue to be Prime Minister in an interim capacity until a new leader is chosen, understanding that he is not the right person to face new elections.

“Canadians deserve to have a real choice in elections and it has become clear to me that, if I have to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in these elections. The country needs a new page”, he explained.

Justin Trudeau added that work in parliament will be suspended until March 24.

It is the first time since November that Justin Trudeau has held a press conference where he has agreed to answer questions from journalists. Asked why he decided to resign from his post now, the prime minister responded that he is “not a person who easily backs down from a fight” but that he has always put Canada first.
