The IPTU rate to be applied in 2025 has already been announced by the majority of 308 Portuguese municipalities, revealing changes that could directly impact property owners. According to data from the Finance Portal, 195 city halls will apply the minimum rate of 0.3%, three more than in the previous year. Lisbon, Faro, Coimbra, Funchal, Leiria and Sintra are among the municipalities that opted for the lower rate, the newspaper reports.
On the other hand, the maximum rate of 0.45% will be maintained by six municipalities, including Vila Real de Santo António, Alandroal, Nazaré, Mafra, Cartaxo and Torre de Moncorvo. Despite this, 37 municipalities decided to reduce their IPTU rates for this year, benefiting property owners with significant reductions. The highlights go to Vila Nova de Poiares, which reduced from 0.45% to 0.39%, and Elvas and Celorico da Beira, which decreased from 0.4% to 0.35%.
Only two municipalities increased the IMI rate for 2025. Torre de Moncorvo, in the district of Bragança, increased from 0.3% to 0.45%, while Évora will apply a slight increase, going from 0.38% to 0.39% . The vast majority of municipalities, a total of 258, decided to keep their rates unchanged.
In addition to general rates, municipalities can apply reductions in IPTU for families with dependents. One child entitles you to a discount of 30 euros, two children to 70 euros and three children to 140 euros. These reductions are a direct incentive to families and depend on each city hall.
On the other hand, the rate applied to rural buildings remains fixed at 0.8% in all municipalities. These changes, although specific, could make a difference in the budget of thousands of families in 2025. To find out exactly how they will be affected, owners should check the decision of the municipality where they own properties.
