45 years later, Tupperware says goodbye to Portugal: economic crisis is feared in the Montalvo region

The closure of the company could open an economic and social crisis in the Montalvo region. Entire families depended on these jobs.

The Tupperware factory in Portugal closes on Wednesday and will leave around 200 people unemployed. The Montalvo unit, in Constância, did not survive the bankruptcy of the headquarters in the United States.

Since 1980, Tupperware has been an important source of survival for workers and for anyone who has a business in that region.

“When [os funcionários da Tupperware] They came in to have coffee, when they left they went to have a snack or a beer and now there is nothing like that anymore,” Fernanda Valente, an employee of a café in the village of Rio de Moinhos, three kilometers from the factory, tells SIC.

Tupperware in Montalvo could not resist the bankruptcy of its headquarters in the United States, on which it was entirely dependent.

Montalvo has just over 1,200 inhabitants. The closure of the factory will therefore have a harsh economic and social impact on the region.

The mayor of Constância asked the Ministry of Labor and Social Security for support for employees, so that their rights are protected and guaranteed.
