At least nine people died after an earthquake hit a remote region of Tibet on Tuesday morning (7), according to Chinese state media.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck at 9:05 a.m. local time, and was followed by several aftershocks.
Both the USGS and the China Earthquake Networks Center gave the location of the epicenter high on the Tibetan Plateau, near the Himalayan border with Nepal.
According to state news agency Xinhua, some houses in the village collapsed during the earthquake.
The closest city to the epicenter is the holy city of Shigatse, which is about 180 kilometers away.
The city is the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, the second greatest spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, after the Dalai Lama.
The USGS tremor map indicated that the earthquake could be felt in neighboring countries such as Nepal and parts of northern India.
