Most children – and many adults too – can enjoy a visit to the zoo. But what pleases some is a stumbling block for others. Voices are regularly raised against keeping animals in zoos. The topic was most recently discussed on social media following the death of a young giraffe in Schönbrunn Zoo at the end of November. The idea of keeping animals for observation or study is a very old one. The Chinese Emperor Wen-Wang was already entertaining in 1150 BC. A “Park of Knowledge” in which tigers, rhinos, tapirs and giant snakes lived.
