The Federal Senate is analyzing a bill that provides for the preservation of Amazon rivers. Authored by senator Sérgio Petecão (PSD-AC), PL 4,199/2024 proposes the creation of the Free Rivers of the Amazon Plan, focusing on preserving and improving the navigability of the rivers that support mobility, economy and culture in the region.
The plan foresees the organization of actions by river basins, promoting cooperation between states such as Acre, Amazonas, Pará and others in the Legal Amazon. The PL seeks to harmonize the economic and environmental uses of water resources, based on the principles of sustainable development, prevention of environmental impacts and the “polluter pays” concept.
In Acre, the Juruá, Purus and Rio Acre rivers, for example, are areas for implementing the plan. With planned activities such as dredging, signage and integrated management of waterways, the proposal also emphasizes environmental education and constant monitoring of water quality.
Among the main objectives of the plan, the following stand out:
-Promote integration between states to ensure the effective execution of actions;
-Encourage social participation and environmental education in riverside communities;
-Reduce pollution of water bodies and mitigate environmental damage;
-Develop sustainable technologies for water transport;
-Prepare communities for extreme events, such as floods or severe droughts.
