Trump already expressed the idea of buying Greenland during his first term of office, but the island’s government rejected it, the BBC reminds.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen declared on Tuesday that the future of Greenland should be decided by its inhabitants. She made her comments after US President-elect Donald Trump recently reiterated that the United States could buy the island from Denmark. “Greenland belongs to Greenlanders,” the Prime Minister told the Danish television station TV 2. She added that this Arctic territory “is not for sale.” Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark and is geographically part of North America. A large American military base is located on this island.
The Prime Minister also called on everyone to “respect that Greenlanders are a nation, it is their country and only Greenland can determine its future,” writes Reuters.
Prime Minister Mute Egede also responded to Trump’s statements about Greenland. “Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and never will be. We must not lose our long fight for freedom,” he declared. In his New Year’s address, he announced that he would strive for the independence of Greenland.
Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., arrived in Greenland on Tuesday, and Reuters and the AP report that it is a private visit and that he has no scheduled meetings with government officials. This visit, according to AP, strengthens speculation that the incoming US administration could seek to annex Greenland to the US.
“No, I’m not going to buy Greenland,” Trump Jr. said Monday, saying he was only going on an extended private trip.
On Monday, on his social network Truth, the newly elected president described Greenland as “a wonderful place whose inhabitants would benefit enormously from becoming part of our nation”.
