It is now making preparations for the possibility that mass deportations of its citizens will begin, a government spokesman announced yesterday, two weeks before the US president-elect takes office.
“We are working on a specific plan” given the threat to begin mass deportations of migrants, presidential spokesman Santiago Palomo said during a press conference, promising “important announcements” in the coming days.
“All measures will be taken with respect for the dignity of these people, their rights and to guarantee their return (to Guatemala) in compliance with international standards,” he added, without elaborating.

Guatemalan authorities estimate that about 2.7 million citizens of the Central American country live in the US, but only 400,000 of them have residence and work permits.
In 2024, US authorities deported a record 61,680 Guatemalans.
