Lula government prepares for new ministerial meeting in January

The Minister of the Civil House, Rui Costa, visited the head of the Treasury, Fernando Haddad, to discuss the matter and economic issues

The Minister Casa Civil, , stated that the meeting with the Minister of Finance, , this Monday (6 January 2025) dealt with preparations for a ministerial meeting that the President (PT) will hold in the 2nd half of January.

The 2 met for almost two hours. They also discussed the 2025 budget, which has not yet been voted on by Congress, and measures to regulate the fiscal package. The meeting was not included in the ministers’ agenda until the publication of this report.

“We are now going to get our hands dirty, make the necessary ordinances and decrees, as well as prepare the ministerial meeting that will take place in the 2nd half of January […] The president wants to take stock of the 2 years of government, the measures that were voted on and what we will do together”declared Costa in an interview with journalists.

Haddad, in turn, classified the meeting as “government routine”. According to him, the measures approved at the end of 2024 “they need to have consequences”.

The head of the economic team also stated that it is necessary for the Treasury and Civil House to be “integrated” so that the sanctioned laws have resulted in a short term.

On December 20, the company announced spending-cutting measures. The changes made in the Chamber and the Senate, in addition to the revision of the GDP (Gross Domestic Product), had a negative impact of R$2.1 billion for the fiscal package in 2025 and 2026.

The government estimates savings of R$69.8 billion over the 2 years. The market says the projections are inflated.
