Minister criticizes big tech’s decision to close its fact-checking system and calls for regulation of platforms in Brazil
The Minister of Agrarian Development, Paulo Teixeira, criticized this Tuesday (7 January 2025) the closure of the fact-checking system.
In his account on X (formerly Twitter), Teixeira said that the big tech transformed your social networks into “UFC rings” –in reference to the Ultimate Fighting Championship, which promotes fighting and martial arts events.
According to the announcement made by the company’s creator, Mark Zuckerberg, the system will be replaced by community notes, which are comments suggested by users themselves to complement or deny the initial post.
Meta will also lift restrictions on posts on its social networks Facebook and Instagram.
Teixeira declared that the changes announced by the company “create an environment of greater confusion in the relationship between social networks and Brazilian society”. The minister also said that it was necessary to move forward with the approval of network regulation by Congress.
