The last 10 kilometers of the D1 highway should be completed in December of this year.
This year, the Czech Republic will complete the oldest and longest D1 highway, which leads from Prague through Brno and Ostrava to Poland. The Roads and Highways Directorate (ŘSD) plans to open the missing ten-kilometer section in December. This was announced on Tuesday by the General Director of the ŘSD Radek Mátl together with the Minister of Transport Martin Kupko, reports TASR in Prague.
“The last 10 kilometers of the D1 highway should be completed in December this year, and it will be the most significant stretch of the highway. The D1 highway was the first highway to be built in the Czech Republic, and this year its entire length will be completed and put into operation,” noted Mátl, adding that the missing section near Přerov will be completed earlier than originally planned.
Minister Kupka emphasized that the ŘSD will manage this year with a record budget exceeding 80 billion crowns (more than three billion euros). According to him, this means that it will be possible to take a significant step in fulfilling the vision of completing the basic highway network in the Czech Republic.
“After last year’s golden highway year and 110 kilometers of newly opened sections, this year we are preparing to put another 74 kilometers of new highways into operation. We are not only opening highways, but also starting the construction of others. This year we will start with another 64 kilometers of new highways and 45 kilometers of first-class roads,” Kupka explained.
According to Mátl, the basic highway network in the Czech Republic should be completed in 2033. He specified that approximately 350 missing kilometers are currently being prepared. 178 kilometers of highways and 62 kilometers of first-class roads are under construction.
In addition to the missing section of D1 near Přerov, the extension of D1 from four lanes to six on the Brno bypass should be completed already in the spring. The minister also called the construction of another part of the Prague Ring Road or the D35 highway, which, according to him, should relieve the overcrowded D1, as a significant progress.
Kupka added that the significant development of road infrastructure is important for the further economic development of the Czech Republic and also for the citizens of the Czech Republic to live better.
