The Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, expressed deep regret over the devastating earthquake in Tibet and offered his prayers to the victims of the disaster. In the meantime, the Chinese authorities have confirmed the death toll to 95 and more than a hundred injured. The number of victims and injured may still rise. TASR writes according to the reports of the AFP and AP agencies and the official website of the Dalai Lama.
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the devastating earthquake that struck Tibet’s Tingzhi District and surrounding regions this morning. It has caused tragic loss of life, numerous injuries and extensive damage to homes and property. I offer my prayers for those who lost their lives and a speedy recovery to those injured in the earthquake,” said the Dalai Lama in an official statement.
The exiled Tibetan government also expressed regret over the tragedy and expressed its sincere condolences to the survivors. The earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 hit the Ting-ž’ district in the south of Tibet the most and was also felt in neighboring Nepal.
Tibet was occupied by the Chinese army in 1950, and after the suppression of the anti-Chinese uprising in 1959, the Dalai Lama fled across the Himalayas into exile in India. He resigned as the formal head of his people in 2011 and was replaced by a democratic government in exile.
