A 276-kilogram tuna was auctioned for US$1.3 million (around R$7.95 million) at the Toyosu market, an artificial island near the Japanese capital, Tokyo, last Sunday (5).
According to the news agency Kyodo News, an intermediary wholesaler, together with the Onodera Group, owner of the Sushi Ginza Onodera restaurant chain – which has already received 13 Michelin stars – purchased bluefin tuna, or bluefin tuna, considered the largest and more expensive tuna variation.
Fish auctions are held frequently in Toyosu, but the New Year auction is treated as special due to the belief that it brings good luck. According to CNN Stylethis was the fifth consecutive time that the Onodera Group won the most expensive fish in the first auction of the year.
