On the second day of every month, the plate of bananas appears on the corner of Abbey Road and Wensor Avenue, in Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom. Residents don’t like it: “it’s disgusting”.
Cartoons and comedy shows have taught us to avoid banana peels, due to the potential danger of slipping and falling. But what should we do when we come across a plate full of the fruit, without the peel?
That’s what’s happening in a small town in Nottinghamshire, in United Kingdom — and no one knows the reason behind this strange tradition.
The mystery dish appears on the second day of every month on the corner of Abbey Road and Wensor Avenue in Beeston. Residents say the banana dish has been a constant in their lives for more than a year.
“I’ve already asked the local community, but no one knows and no one can tell me anything,” a resident tells the BBC.
“The bananas appear early in the morning, on the second day of the month, I see them on the way to work. I would really like to know the answers to this”, confesses Claire Short.
Fruit left to chance elicits a mixed reaction, with some neighbors saying the bananas get moldy and the street is no longer as attractive.
Claire tried to take matters into her own hands. He placed a sign where the dish is to prevent the yellow fruit from being left there again. However, on January 2nd, another plate of peeled bananas appeared in the usual spot.
“I came to take down the posters because I don’t want this to turn into a dispute, I don’t want it to become a big deal,” he said.
“I think it’s a special thing for [alguém] and I wish you happiness. But if they could come back and clean up the mess a few days later, that would be great,” he says, “I’ll keep an eye on it and keep cleaning the damn thing up.”
“It’s disgusting”
Other neighbors preferred that the bananas disappear altogether.
“I live nearby and they appear very often,” says 26-year-old Josh Trentham. “They are very irritatingI have no idea why they are here.”
Jill Dowling, another resident, added: “It’s so weird and disgusting, I don’t like it.”
“The bananas were clearly purchased recently and the wildlife won’t touch them,” says resident Janet Hutchinson, 81. “They get moldy — it’s disgusting,” he adds.
Another resident, intrigued, wonders if the gesture is a custom in other places. “I’ve never heard or seen this anywhere else I’ve lived,” admits Adam Castle, 34.
