Two firefighters lost their lives when extinguishing a fire that broke out in a warehouse of petroleum substances in the Russian city of Engels after an attack allegedly by Ukrainian drones. Referring to the status of the governor of the Saratov region, Roman Busargin, the AFP reported this on Wednesday, TASR reports.
Busargin also announced that due to the increase in the area of the fire in the industrial enterprise that was attacked by drones, there activated the state of emergency.
On Wednesday afternoon, several Russian bloggers published information on the Telegram network, according to which another oil tank had exploded in the burning oil depot. They also released videos from local residents who saw a powerful flash and a column of fire and smoke.
In the city of Engels there is also an air base for long-range bombers, which are part of the Russian strategic nuclear forces. Ukraine has already attacked it in the past. In December 2022, three members of the Russian Air Force were killed there when a drone was shot down.
The city of Engels is located on the left bank of the Volga River, on the opposite bank of which lies the metropolis of the region – the city of Saratov, about 730 kilometers southeast of Moscow. Hundreds of kilometers separate this location from the Ukrainian border.
