In a message read at the event at Palácio do Planalto, the president of the (Supreme Federal Court), criticized what he called a “false narrative” that confronting extremism “would constitute authoritarianism”.
“In Brazil and around the world, the false narrative is being spread that confronting extremism and putschism, within the rule of law, would constitute authoritarianism,” he said, in a message read by the vice-president of the Supreme Court, .
Barroso, who is abroad, did not participate in the event. “It is the disguise of those who have not given up on anti-democratic adventures, violating the rules of the game and suppressing human rights”, continues Barroso’s message.
“Lies continue to be used as a naturalized political instrument. Easy times will not come. But we need to continue to resist.”
STF decisions related to January 8 have been criticized by opposition parliamentarians and also by a number of lawyers for alleged excessive rigidity.

At Planalto, the piece is located in the Audience Room on the floor of the president’s office, where the event took place.
In addition to Fachin, the Supreme Court ministers Cristiano Zanin, Cármen Lúcia and Gilmar Mendes were present at the ceremony on January 8th.
