The UK’s new ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) system came into force on Wednesday into force for visa-free travelers from countries outside Europe, including the United States, Canada and Australia. It will apply to EU residents on April 2. TASR writes according to a report by AFP and The New York Times.
The ETA system was introduced by the British government for short-term visits to the UK of up to six months to “streamline the digital immigration system”the British Home Office said. It is intended only for people who do not need classic visas to enter the country, an approved ETA is also required when transiting through Britain.
The fee for ETA is 10 pounds (approx. 12 euros), but its approval is not a guarantee of admission. Those arriving in Britain must go through passport control and border control may not allow them to enter, reports the Daily Express. It is valid for two years.
The ETA system was first launched in 2023 for Qatar, which was later supplemented by five more states in the Persian Gulf. On January 8, the authorization began to apply to another 40 countries and it will gradually become mandatory for all visa-free visitors to Britain.
From April 2, British authorities will require authorization from residents of the European Unionwhile applications for it will start on March 5. The ETA does not apply to UK residents or those with permission to live, work or study in the country. Citizens of China and other countries will continue to need standard visas to enter Britain.
