Demonstrations will be on January 9th; It is not clear whether the opposition leader, who says he defeated Chavista, will return to Venezuela

The opposition in Venezuela called on Venezuelans to participate in events on Thursday (9.Jan.2025). The date is the day before the presidential inauguration, scheduled for Friday (10 January).

The CNE (National Electoral Council), aligned with the Chavista government, declared the victory of Nicolás Maduro (United Socialist Party of Venezuela, left) in the July 28 elections. The opposition says there was electoral fraud and claims that the winner was Edmundo González Urrutia (Democratic Unitary Platform, center-right). On X (formerly Twitter), González who “everyone went to the street”.

González’s publication was made on Sunday (5 January). He shared a video of María Corina, leader of the Venezuelan opposition, talking about the acts on Thursday (9 January).

No video, María Corina that “each person is a piece of change”. According to her, Maduro “I wouldn’t go out alone” from the government and, therefore, it is “I need to make him leave”.

In X on Tuesday (7th January), María Corina once again called Venezuelans to the events. She asked everyone to dress in yellow, blue or red (the colors of the Venezuelan flag).

Tensions in Venezuela have been escalating since the July election. On Tuesday (Jan 7), Venezuela reported having in the country, including 2 North American citizens who, according to Maduro, are from “very high rank”.

Also on Tuesday (Jan 7), González stated that Rafael Tudares, his son-in-law, was approached by hooded individuals dressed in black in Caracas, the Venezuelan capital, while he was taking his children to school, being forced into a golden van.

It is not clear whether González will return to Venezuela for the events on Thursday (Jan. 9). Maduro for information leading to the arrest of the opponent.

The diplomat has been there since September 2024. He sought refuge in the European country after the Venezuelan court against him for failing to comply with 3 subpoenas from the Public Ministry to clarify the matter – although the documents are public in democratic countries with free elections.

González had said, in November, that he was in Venezuela on the day of Maduro’s inauguration. In recent days, he has been touring countries in the Americas – but did not include Brazil in the itinerary.

He met with the presidents of Argentina, (La Libertad Avanza, right), and the United States, (Democratic Party).

In the USA, the opponent also met with North American congressmen. Among them, Mike Waltz, for the North American president-elect, Donald Trump (Republican Party), as National Security Advisor.

González also met with the leaders of Panama and Luis Almagro, secretary general of the OAS (Organization of American States).

Venezuelan authorities said González would be arrested if “touch your finger” in Venezuela. The government will have 1,200 soldiers in reinforced security during Maduro’s inauguration, in order to avoid any opposition articulation.

VENEZUELA SOB MADURO

Human Rights Watch criticized presidents Lula, Gustavo Petro (Colombia) and Andrés Manuel López Obrador (Mexico) in August 2024. They stated in a letter sent to the 3 that it was necessary for them to reconsider their positions on Venezuela and criticized the leaders’ proposals to resolve the impasse, as a general amnesty.
