The Minister of Justice and Public Security, Ricardo Lewandowski, said this Wednesday (8), in the event commemorating the attacks on the headquarters of Power, on January 8, 2023, that the depredation of democracy did not begin on that day. According to him, it was a “subtle” process.
“We soon realized that the attack on our democracy did not begin on January 8th. The process was more subtle, more gradual. We are now experiencing a climate of growing disinformation fueled by attacks on the efficiency of the electronic voting machine, on the electoral process itself and, consequently, on our Electoral Justice”, stated Lewandowski.
The minister, who was a member of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) at the time of the attacks, said that the episode was regrettable.
“We are faced with a true war scenario, something unimaginable in the Democratic State of Law”, declared the Minister of Justice.
Lewandowski also stated that Brazil has seen an “exacerbated nationalism” emerge under the “guise” of fighting corruption. “Unfortunately, the history of Brazil shows us that attempted conspiracies were not exceptions,” he said.
The Minister of Justice also defended firmness and vigilance to preserve democracy and stated that threats to democracy should be reminders of the value it represents.
