Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez warned on Wednesday of a possible return of fascism. He responded to the statements of the American billionaire and owner of the X network, Elon Musk, who, according to him, openly attacks institutions and incites hatred. Meanwhile, France has called on the EU to defend itself against external interference by Musk. TASR informs about it according to the AFP agency.

Musk, who is an adviser to US President-elect Donald Trump, has sparked outrage with his outbursts at European leaders, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Sánchez, speaking at the beginning of commemorative events on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the death of dictator Francisco Franco, indirectly accused Musk of leading an international “reactionary” movement that, among other things, “openly calls for the support of the heirs of Nazism in the upcoming elections in Germany.”

“All this is a problem – a challenge that should be a challenge for all of us who believe in democracy,” declared the socialist prime minister at an event at Madrid’s Queen Sofia Art Museum.

As he pointed out, autocratic regimes are booming in half of the world. In this context, he pointed out that “fascism, which we thought we had left behind, is now the third political force in Europe”. According to AFP, he was directly referring to the growing support of far-right parties across the continent.

Musk’s support Alternative for Germany

Musk has recently repeatedly expressed his support for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, described as extreme or extreme right-wing. According to the media, he intervened in the pre-election campaign, as early elections await Germany on February 23. On his X network, Musk plans to hold a debate with AfD chairwoman and chancellor candidate Alice Weidel on Thursday.

The world’s richest man also called on British Prime Minister Starmer to resign over his alleged failure to punish gangs that systematically raped children.

Journalist Andrew Norfolk, who exposed the scandal in 2011, when Starmer was the head of the prosecutor’s office, defends the current prime minister. “I want to set the record straight. It was Starmer who changed the rules to allow more prosecutions. That happened and there was a huge increase in convictions,” Norfolk said.

Among other things, Musk is demanding the release of Tommy Robinson from prison, where he has been serving an 18-month sentence for contempt of court since October. Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, was named by AFP as one of the most famous far-right activists in Britain.

The billionaire also called on the current chairman of the British anti-immigration party Reform UK, Nigel Farage, to take the post “because he doesn’t have it”. Farage was apparently supported until recently.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot also called on the European Commission on Wednesday to protect member states with the “greatest determination” from Musk’s interference in the political debate. He told the France Inter radio station that it was necessary to “wake up”.
