Hospitalized since last Friday (3), the mayor of Belo Horizonte, Fuad Noman (PSD)remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Mater Dei Hospital, but his health status has improved.

According to a medical bulletin released this Tuesday (7), the mayor is “lucid and oriented” and responds well to treatment.

Fuad was hospitalized with acute respiratory failure caused by pneumonia. In recent days, the infectious condition showed improvement, and antibiotics were adjusted according to laboratory test results. On Monday (6), he was extubated and is now breathing with the help of a high-flow nasal catheter.

The mayor had already faced health problems in recent months. During the 2024 election campaign, he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which required treatment with chemotherapy sessions. In October, Fuad announced that he had completed treatment.

Because of low immunity, doctors recommended that he avoid crowds. Thus, Fuad participated in the inauguration ceremony, on January 1st, via video call. On the occasion, he wore a mask and took the oath with difficulty speaking, while the vice-mayor, Álvaro Damião (União), read his speech.

Since his re-election, this is the fourth time that Fuad has been hospitalized. Despite this, he continued to work until the beginning of the year, when he had to be hospitalized again. Recent clinical developments, however, are a positive sign of recovery.

Solidarity

The PSOL councilors in Belo Horizonte – Cida Falabela, Iza Lourença and Juhlia Santos – issued a note of solidarity with the mayor. In the text, they highlighted the relevance of Fuad’s leadership for the city and reaffirmed his commitment to the population.

“We leave our prayers and positive thoughts with Mayor Fuad Noman and his family, confident that his recovery will be brief,” the parliamentarians wrote. They also defended dialogue between different sectors as a tool to build a “fairer, more democratic and inclusive” city.

The PSOL bench highlighted that it will remain attentive to the population’s demands during the mayor’s absence. According to them, the focus continues to be on cooperation to advance the agenda and strengthen public policies in Belo Horizonte.
