Pavel Durov stated that the values of his platform “do not depend on US election cycles”
The owner of Telegram, , made a comment mocking the CEO of Meta, , after the company announced it on the social networks Facebook and Instagram. The change in policy big tech follows the return of Donald Trump (Republican) to the presidency of the United States.
“Today, other platforms are announcing that they will now have less censorship. But the real test of your newfound values will come when the political winds shift again. Our values do not depend on US election cycles”declared in a note.
Throughout the North American election campaign, one of the president-elect’s greatest allies was billionaire Elon Musk, owner of the social network X (formerly Twitter) and defender of policies such as those adopted by Meta.
Among the measures announced on Tuesday (7 January) by Mark Zuckerberg is the replacement of fact checking with “Community Notes”, similar to the existing format in X.
In a message on his channel on the messaging application, Durov also said that he is “proud to support free speech even before it became a politically safe thing to do”.
“It’s easy to say you support something when you don’t risk anything to do it.”he stated.

In August 2024, the CEO of Telegram was arrested for 4 days after being indicted on six counts of running an application that allows users to commit crimes, such as disseminating child pornography, drug trafficking and fraud.
He paid bail of €5 million (R$30.7 million).
