Thirteen soldiers are missing after an explosion at an ammunition depot in eastern Cuba, the Cuban armed forces said late Tuesday evening local time. TASR informs about it according to the Reuters agency.
The Cuban military announced that four officers and nine soldiers who were sorting old ammunition in a warehouse were among the missing.
An ammunition depot exploded early Tuesday morning local time in the small village of Melones in Holguin province, about 730 kilometers southeast of Havana. Authorities earlier said a fire broke out after the explosions and 361 people were evacuated to safety. The cause of the incident is still under investigation.
In videos on social networks, dark smoke and flames can be seen above the wooded surroundings of the village of Melones. Access roads to the warehouse are guarded by soldiers and local police, rescue teams and firefighters were deployed to fight the flames.
