Μαργαρίτης Σχοινάς στο συνέδριο του Βήματος: «Το ευρωπαϊκό Iron Dome δεν είναι επιστημονικής φαντασίας»

He spoke about the new landscape on , the emergence of Hungarian-related media there, the role of social media platforms that limit the verification of news, among other things, in an interview with Politico and specifically in the newsletter playbook the former vice president of .

Mr. Schoinas referred to the important role that journalists have to “fill the gap” that is created from the moment the platforms will not proceed with fact checking of the news while for him the European public space remains fragmented.

The interview follows

Is the media in Brussels moving to the right?

“The media in Brussels reflects the changing political reality in Europe, but I wouldn’t say it’s a conscious right (or left) shift. It is more of an adaptation to new conditions. This development underlines the importance of Brussels and proves that EU policies have substance.”

How do you see the appearance of Hungary-related media in Brussels?

“Their appearance shows that the EU is seen as a critical battleground for ideas and influence. These media are part of a wider trend where national political actors are trying to shape the narrative in Brussels. Diversity can enhance debate only if everyone plays by the same rules — in terms of transparency and funding. I believe that any medium that consistently broadcasts a single narrative will not have a long-term impact.”

What is the role of journalists now that social media platforms are reducing content verification and curation?

“This is the moment of truth for journalists. They have a greater responsibility to meet standards of accuracy and analysis. They must fill the voids left behind by platforms like Elon Musk’s… All journalists—even the “traditional” ones—must try to balance the echo chambers. and reinforce his own) created on these platforms”

Should the EU adapt its communication strategy to be more dynamic?

“The EU’s communication strategy is constantly evolving. The Commission has adopted a more dynamic, direct approach — with specialized teams, more resources and a quick response to disinformation. The Commission and the EEAS are getting better and better at this game, much more than the EU’s enemies think.”

What matters more to the EU institutions: Brussels ‘bubble’ media or national media?

“Both are important, but in different ways. The former set the tone within Brussels, influencing actors and decision-makers. However, national media shape public opinion and political reality in member states. EU institutions must bridge them to remain credible”

Is a real European public space developing?

“Media such as Politico, Euractiv and Euronews have contributed to the creation of a more interconnected European public space. However, he remains fragmented. A truly European public discourse appears only twice a year: on the night of Eurovision and the Champions League final.”

Right Turn in Brussels Media

As the new European Commission enters its second month, several journalists in Brussels are finding new jobs. New media, such as Brussels Signal, focus on Eurosceptic views, while other initiatives, such as La Matinale Européenne, keep Europeanism alive.

As Politico comments, the right-wing turn is causing concern, especially at Euronews, where there are fears of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s influence. Journalists have complained about “partisan and unsubstantiated positions”.

Mr. Commenting on the changes, Schinas said – offering a more optimistic view that “the diversity of opinion in Brussels reflects the breadth of European politics” and that media that broadcast a one-dimensional narrative will not succeed.
