Do you want to enjoy a colorful carpet in spring? Sow these flowers in January

Annuals are the perfect option for a spring carpet. However, in order to enjoy their beauty in spring, they must be sown quickly enough. Various species can decorate the garden, however those with the longest growing season should be sown in the coming days.

Some plants take up to four months to bloom. Therefore, they should be sown already in January. Of course, if we do it later, they will also bloom, but these flowers will appear proportionally later. Plants that should be sown earliest are:

• Begonia constantly blooming — it is a beautiful annual plant that reaches 10-20 cm in height. It has green or reddish purple stems and shiny leaves that may be the same color as the stem. The flowers have various colors depending on the variety. This may include, among others: white, pink or red. Begonia blooms from June to October. It will work great for flower carpets.
• Mexican ginseng — this plant can be from 10 to 60 cm tall. The leaves are heart-shaped. It blooms beautifully throughout spring and summer, until autumn and the first frost. Its flowers are blue, sometimes we see dirty pink or white varieties. A perfect complement to a floral carpet.
• Cape lobelia – reaches 10-25 cm in height. It blooms from June to late autumn. It is especially popular because of its small flowers, which, depending on the variety, may be white, pink or blue.
• Garden petunia – it is a spreading plant that emits a specific smell. There are many varieties that vary in height. Petunias have cup-shaped flowers. This plant blooms from June to autumn. It can be white, pink, blue, red or purple. Sometimes we also come across two-colored petunias.
• Glossy sage — is an annual plant that reaches a height of 25-50 cm. It is characterized by four-cornered stems. The leaves are ovoid in shape. This sage blooms from June to September. The tiny flowers have an intense red color. They are harvested for sewing shoots that reach up to 10 cm.

Sowing this type of flowers is simple and you don’t need a greenhouse – all you need is some space at home. To sow flowers, we will need seeds, flower containers, substrate, sprinkler and a plastic cover.

First, fill small pots, trays or other sowing containers with soil (do not fill them to the brim). They should be lightly tamped and leveled, then scatter the selected flower seeds. We should cover sage and sage with a thin layer of soil. The remaining seeds should be gently pressed into the substrate. If the soil is dry, water the seeds using a sprinkler immediately after sowing. Next, cover the container with foil and place it in a warm place – it is best for the room temperature to be 18-20 degrees Celsius. It is also important that the seeds have access to sunlight.

To make things easier, it is worth labeling the pots – then we will know what flowers are starting to sprout. When they start to develop, remove the cover and sprinkle the soil more often to prevent the soil from drying out. It is best not to sow a lot of seeds in one place, because we will have to replant them later. Before planting them in the garden, they need to be adapted to cooler temperatures or hardened off. This involves placing the seedlings outside during the day (at least for two weeks).
