Erika Hilton asks the UN to investigate Meta for network changes

Congresswoman says the end of fact-checking will allow the spread of hate speech against the LGBTQIA+ community

The federal deputy (Psol-SP) asked on Wednesday (8.Jan.2025) that the (United Nations) investigate and put an end to fact checking. In a document sent to Professor Nicolas Levrat, special rapporteur for minorities and diversity, the congresswoman states that the update will negatively impact the LGBTQIA+ community.

The deputy bases the request on 2 international treaties ratified by the UN, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights of 1966 and the Declaration on the Rights of Persons Belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious and Linguistic Minorities of 1992. The documents would, according to Hilton , being violated by big tech.

The congresswoman also argues that, with the changes, Meta could be considered an accomplice in violating the rights of groups protected by Brazilian law.

“Unfortunately, despite the effortsthose of the legislationand the institutionsBrazilian judicial systems, the changespolicy by large corporationsActions like the Meta continue to put the lives of LGBTQIA+ individuals at risk and undermine the international commitments that Brazil has assumed and is obliged to fulfill”, declare.

She asks the UN to investigate the violations and notify Meta’s founder, Mark Zuckerberg, so that he can provide detailed information about the company’s new internal policy.

On her account on X (formerly Twitter), the congresswoman who, as a transvestite and human rights activist, cannot allow practices that violate fundamental rights to go unpunished.

“In Brazil, where transphobia and violence against LGBTQIA+ are already reaching alarming levels, corporate decisions like these put lives at risk and weaken the hard work for justice and equality.”
