The bets of prophets of zero-risk democracy have aged badly. Since this group of missionaries has tried to calm Brazilian citizens about the risks to democracy, understood as a vote counting machine independent of any other attribute that gives these votes a genuine basis for collective self-government and public freedom.
From the assessment of personality, a task that political science has never authorized a political scientist to do in its name, or the statement that “moderate democracy”, a conclusion that political history has never allowed it to reach, or the idea that it would be a “dam ” to the president, to the point of analytical catatonia “institutions are working”, there were many attempts to appease “alarmism”.
Always mistaken, time turned them into caricatures. From coup plotters in the Presidency to the attempted coup, the risk warnings were not that extravagant and far-sighted.
Psychoanalysis was more realistic and shrewd. Psychoanalyst Luiz Meyer, in Sheet of June 2020 anticipated a coup attempt not as the doubt of a political scientist immersed in a data spreadsheet, but as an inexorable psychic determination. He did not treat the coup as a hypothesis, nor did he have the know-it-all ambition to calculate risks. I just wanted to explain why the coup impetus was no joke:
“We are not facing a histrionic buffoon who beats the bass drum in the square of a small country town. The act he performs is the expression of the intolerant child, haunted by his little chair, who presents himself as the redeemer who will blur all limits and limitations. Cornered by a mind that serves the little child with whom it is identified, that does not accept or support any form of ‘belt’, it needs to create a world in which all child seats are destroyed.”
serves as a symbolic warning about many things. First, the constitutive fragility of the democratic regime. Even if it is possible to explain why some democracies are more stable and long-lived than others, we do not have such powerful tools to accurately determine risks. Because, to a large extent, they are intangible.
Second, we learned once again the consequences of treating Brazilian military delinquency through cowardice and leniency. Third, it demonstrates the civic corrosion power of the disinformation industry, raised to an unknown level by technology capable of individualizing profiles and customizing manipulation. And there are people who think that a network managed by an algorithm determined by a plutocrat is equivalent to a public square. And that this technological corporate power would please Adam Smith and Stuart Mill.
Fourth, the immense confusion over the concept of freedom of expression, commonly transformed into a pre-civil weapon of attack on the social preconditions of freedom.
January 8 finally symbolizes that it has the responsibility and opportunity to correct one of the most shameful constitutional errors in its history: the understanding that the Amnesty Law prevents it from prosecuting crimes against humanity. Since 2011, action on the topic has been slumbering in the drawer of (ADPF 153). Flávio Dino began to face this debt: he decided that the disappearance of a body is a permanent crime.
