Government recommends that RTP1 should tend to stop being financed by advertising and drops the imposition of the end in 2027

Pedro Duarte said that the contract review concession of RTP’s public radio and television service was placed, this Wednesday, in public consultation and that “one of the measures that is there has to do” with its financing.

The Minister of Parliamentary Affairs announced, on Wednesday, that the new RTP concession contract recommends that RTP1 should tend to stop being financed by advertising, without establishing a deadline, with the imposition of its end in 2027.

Pedro Duarte, who spoke in added that the contract review concession of RTP’s public radio and television service was placed, this Wednesday, in public consultation and that “one of the measures that is there has to do” with its financing.

“We had an original intention of freeing RTP from commercial advertising” by 2027 “in order to be closer to the people and, therefore, reach more people”, but “parliament stopped this” and “democratically we were, in a certain sense, forced to give up on this original idea”, and it is now recommended that “RTP should tend to be in the coming years, we don’t have a deadline, but it should move in the direction that RTP1 stops being financed by commercial advertising”, stated the government official.
