The controversial presidential election in Romania is scheduled to be repeated on May 4th with the first round and on May 18th with the second. The Liberals announced on Wednesday that they and the government’s other two coalition partners would run with Crin Antonescu as their joint candidate. At the beginning of December, the Supreme Court ruled that the presidential election on November 24th had to be completely repeated. This was preceded by allegations of illegal Russian influence. At that time, the less well-known, right-wing, pro-Russian politician Călin Georgescu won the vote in the NATO and EU countries. (Reuters, January 8, 2025)
