The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, suggested this Wednesday (8) changing the name of a region of the United States, in response to the plan of the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico.
“Why don’t we call this ‘Mexican America’? Looks good, right?” Sheinbaum asked about the southwestern United States while pointing to the territories on a map.
Furthermore, he added that the name “Gulf of Mexico” is internationally recognized.
“Obviously, the name Gulf of Mexico is recognized by the United Nations,” said the president during her daily press conference.
The name has been “internationally recognized since 1607,” Sheinbaum insisted.
The Mexican president’s comments were made one day after Trump said he wanted to, alluding to the fact that the United States uses the term “America”, in English, to designate its own country.
“We’re going to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which sounds great. That covers a lot of territory, the Gulf of the United States, what a beautiful name. And it is appropriate,” Trump said as he addressed reporters at Mar-a-Lago.
Sheinbaum responds to Trump on allegation that Mexico is controlled by cartels
The Mexican president gave a simple answer that her country is “essentially run by cartels”.
“It’s false,” Sheinbaum countered. “Mexico is governed by its people.”
Referring to comments made by Trump the previous day, the Mexican leader suggested that “maybe I was misinformed and think that Felipe Calderón and García Luna still govern.”
Calderón is a former president who governed Mexico from 2006 to 2012. Genaro García Luna is a former Calderón government official who was convicted in the United States of accepting bribes from drug cartels.
Trump, who has threatened to impose tariffs on products from Mexico if the Latin country does not act to stop the flow of migrants and drugs across the border, claimed at a press conference on Tuesday that Mexico was “essentially run by cartels” and said that “you might as well not let that happen.”
“Mexico is really in trouble, a lot of trouble, it’s a very dangerous place,” Trump said.
However, Sheinbaum appeared to downplay the comments, rejecting suggestions that they could cause a rift in relations between the United States and Mexico and saying he believes “there will be a good relationship.”
