SÃO PAULO (Reuters) – The greater volatility in electricity prices throughout 2024, due to an unfavorable rain scenario, caused the negotiation of energy contracts on the BBCE electronic platform to triple compared to the previous year, to R$ 88.4 billion.

More than 100,000 energy contracts were transacted, a growth of 324% compared to the previous year, said BBCE, which leads negotiations on contracts with physical delivery and which in recent years has also started to offer derivatives, mainly targeting “energy contracts” operations. hedge”.

In terms of energy volume, there were approximately 600 terawatt-hours (+74%) in 2024, more than the entire Brazilian consumption of 531.9 TWh in 2023, pointed out the institution, citing data from the Energy Research Company (EPE).

After two years of practically stagnation, electricity trading broke records last year, when a severe drought and an increase in load increased the volatility of input prices on the free market, boosting business between traders, generators and consumers.

In addition to more volatile prices, electricity trading operations have also benefited from the process of expansion and maturation of the free market, which starts to demand more “speed, security and efficiency”, pointed out Eduardo Rossetti, commercial, products, communication director and BBCE marketing.

Of the volume operated at BBCE in 2024, the majority of business involved quarterly contracts (33%), followed by monthly (30%) and annual (27%).
