US President-elect Donald Trump confirmed on Friday morning that a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the war in Ukraine is being prepared. TASR informs about it according to the AFP agency. “He wants to meet and we’re setting it up,” Trump said at a meeting with Republican governors at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. “President Putin wants to meet, he even said so publicly, and we have to end this bloody war,” he declared.
Trump informed about the ongoing preparations for the meeting with Putin a week and a half before resuming the post of US president. Trump also spoke about his intention to meet Putin at Tuesday’s press conference. During the election campaign, Trump promised to end the almost three-year-long war in Ukraine. According to his own words, he would like the war to end within six months of his inauguration. However, Trump has never made it clear how he wants to achieve this goal.
AFP reminds that the old-fashioned president regularly criticized the massive military aid to Ukraine by the administration of President Joe Biden during the campaign.. In his speeches, he also criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whom he called a “businessman”. On the contrary, he rarely criticized the Russian president and sometimes even spoke of him with admiration. The United States under the leadership of Biden was one of the biggest supporters of Ukraine. As of February 2022, they have provided it with military aid worth more than $65 billion.
