The councilor of Vile Santos (PL) filed this Friday (10) a bill for the city hall of the capital of Minas Gerais to accept as one of the means of paying taxes, fees and fines in the city.
The proposal also states that adherence to the use of as a payment method is optional and that it will be the municipality’s responsibility to hire a specialized company to convert the asset’s price into its respective value in reais.
“Bitcoin is the main digital currency in the world and needs to be promoted not only in our city but throughout Brazil, bitcoin is freedom”, says the first-term councilor, former advisor to state deputy Bruno Engler (PL).
Vile’s project also proposes to encourage the adoption of bitcoin as a means of payment in the city’s businesses through campaigns for merchants and consumers.
The initiative is not unprecedented in the country. In 2023, Rio de Janeiro City Hall announced that it began accepting digital currency as a means of paying the municipality’s IPTU (Urban Property and Territorial Property Tax).
