A Slovak climber did not survive a fall in the Great Cold Valley in the High Tatras on Friday afternoon. The Mountain Rescue Service () reported that his friends requested help for a 57-year-old man via the emergency line 112.

“While climbing the middle Grosz Icefall, a man fell out, seriously injured himself and fell unconscious. The fellow climbers managed to transport him to a safe place, where they started with a layman’s phone-controlled resuscitation,” stated HZS.

At the same time, rescuers from the Vysoké Tatry Regional Center of HZS were heading to the scene. The rescue team then continued with extended CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), which continued continuously even during transport with the help of an automatic resuscitation device.

Mountain rescuers evacuated the patient from the icefall to the hiking trail using rope technology. Further, transport took place along the tourist trail to Hrebienok by land and to Starý Smokovec by snowmobile. “Unfortunately, despite great efforts, the doctor of the called emergency medical aid crew stated that the man could not be revived. The remains of the poor man were handed over to members of the SR Police Force,” added HZS.
