Hand on heart. How many times this week did you get up or go to bed with pain? And where did it hurt? Was it the back? “Relief can sometimes come quickly. But you have to find out where it comes from,” says physiotherapist Tomáš Rychnovský in the iReceptář podcast.

According to some statistics, up to ninety percent of the adult population occasionally has back pain. It is so easy to take a powder at that moment or apply analgesic ointment instead. And so fast. But it never works long-term, and certainly not for pain that comes back.
It’s better to find out why it bothers you. “Perceive how long the pain is in the body and how it behaves. For example, if it’s sharper, if it stings more during exercise or, on the contrary, goes away,” advises Tomáš Rychnovský, a physiotherapist and psychotherapist who also deals with psychosomatic pain.
Shake it up
Movement, or rather proper healthy exercise, definitely represents a long-term path to a healthy back. And if it’s just a minor problem, it’s possible that you’ll get relief within a day or two. However, if you are starting a similar exercise, or if it is a new type of pain, be sure to get advice on the exercises. Ideally from a physiotherapist who will examine you and be able to determine where the focus of pain might be.
Sometimes one pain is hidden under another, or pain in the lower back can manifest itself as a bigger problem with the pelvis. With less typical pain, of course, go to the doctor, but sometimes the best thing to do is the right exercise.
Psychosomatics in practice
What if exercise does not help despite all efforts? Of course, the cause can be a more serious health problem, inflammation or disease. But the stumbling block can also be somewhere completely different. “The body will tell you if the origin of the pain is stored in the psyche. And there are many more of those cases than you would think,” warns the expert.
It is the person who also deals with psychosomatics who may be the best at helping you get rid of the cause. “A specific find always gives a relatively quick insight into the emotional background of the person who comes to me. It’s just whether he has pain on the left or right side of the spine,” he adds.
According to him, internal tension often manifests itself precisely in the back and its pain. When you realize that something hurts you when you are stressed, or something specific is causing you a problem in your life and you can solve that problem, it is possible that your back pain will go away once or twice.
