The Official State Gazette (BOE) publishes this Friday a royal decree of October 29 from the Head of State by which the Necklace of the Distinguished Order of the Golden Fleece is awarded to Queen Sofia of Greece.
“Wanting to testify of My Royal appreciation to Her Majesty Queen Sofia and publicly recognize her dedication and dedication to the service of Spain and the Crown, after hearing the Council of Ministers, I come to grant to my mother, Her Majesty Queen Sofia , the Necklace of the Distinguished Order of the Golden Fleece,” says the BOE.
The royal decree is signed by the first vice president of the Government and Minister of Finance, María Jesús Montero, “by substitution” of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez.
The Golden Fleece was born as an order of Chivalry created in 1430 by the Duke of Burgundy on the occasion of his marriage to Isabel of Portugal. Passing to his grandson Charles I – the Emperor of Spain Charles V – the kings of Spain are since then sovereigns of the order.
The distinction consists of a gold necklace with the arms of the dukes of Burgundy, from which hangs the mythical golden fleece, a gift from the gods that guaranteed prosperity and a symbol of heroism from the exploits of Jason and the Argonauts.
Its fundamental symbols are the golden ram that hangs from the necklace and the double ‘B’ that forms each of its links, two letters facing each other like flints from which flames emerge, representing the brilliance and speed in war. As it is not hereditary, it must be returned upon the death of the owner who owns it.
