It’s not easy for Pedro Nuno Santos. The PS secretary general has spoken to many possible candidates for president of the Republic. However, one year before the election, there is still not a single name on the table. Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues says he has the solution.
There are several names socialists who have been mentioned to take up a candidacy for Bethlehem.
The PS secretary general himself has already admitted to having contacted, on the subject, names such as Antonio José Seguro, Mario Centeno e Ana Gomesand, according to , intends to speak with Elisa Ferreira.
Also Antonio Vitorino e Augusto Santos Silva These are names being talked about to get into the race.
Faced with so many names that are “running around”, precisely one year before the presidential elections, Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues say a solution to choose the socialist candidate: primary elections in the PS open to activists and supporters.
According to Expresso, the former President of the Assembly of the Republic is the main defender of this American solution; but has strong support within the party.
“Only a candidacy that covers the entire party can have the chance to go to the second round after a proclamation convention following open primary elections,” he said, speaking to the weekly, highlighting that there is time and strong political reasons to follow this solution.
The objective is not to let the party divide, once again, before the presidential elections and, on the contrary, unite it around a strong and consensual candidate.
Daniel Adrianoformer candidate for general secretary of the party, is one of those who defend this method, which “strengthens internal democracy”.
Also speaking to Expresso, the leader of an internal minority within the PS, argues that this decision must be taken “in a broad way and not just by a small group of leaders”.
“Whenever the PS opened its doors to citizenship, it gained more strength and mobilized the Portuguese, inaugurating new political cycles”, he considered.
