Bitcoin (BTC), the world’s best-known cryptocurrency, continued to surprise markets in 2024 by reaching record values. In a year that began with cryptocurrency surpassing US$73,000, December brought with it a historic milestone: Bitcoin broke, for the first time, the US$100,000 barrier. This increase boosted the creation of 56,325 new millionaires throughout the year.
According to data from , the number of wallets with million-dollar balances in Bitcoin grew 58.21% in 2024. While in December 2023 there were around 97 thousand accounts with values exceeding 1 million dollars, this number rose to more than 153 thousand in end of 2024. Of these, 48,738 held between 1 million and 10 million dollars, and 7,587 held more than 10 million.
A curious fact is the consistency with which this phenomenon occurred throughout the year. On average, 154 new millionaires were created per day during 2024, meaning that every day, new investors reached the $1 million Bitcoin milestone. This metric highlights the constant impact of cryptocurrency appreciation over the months.
Despite the significant impact, the number of new Bitcoin millionaires was lower than that recorded in 2023, when 70 thousand millionaire addresses were created. Experts explain this difference with the enthusiasm observed at the beginning of the market recovery, in 2023, and the entry of investors attracted by lower values.
Another factor that marked 2024 was the approval, in January, of Bitcoin ETFs by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), in the United States. These financial products facilitated access to cryptocurrency, reducing the need to register new individual wallets. In turn, Donald Trump’s re-election in November brought optimism to blockchain markets, with companies adopting similar strategies to MicroStrategy, which has invested heavily in Bitcoin.
Still, Bitcoin’s dominance has been challenged by the growing popularity of altcoins and meme coins, which have captured some of the interest of investors looking for potential quick gains.
In a context of rapid evolution in the cryptocurrency market, Bitcoin continues to shape the digital economy and attract the attention of investors around the world.
