Do you want to wash ecologically, but also effectively remove dirt from clothes and other textiles? Contrary to appearances, store-bought pills and liquids aren’t your only allies. It is worth following the method of our grandmothers and using… eggshells. Not only do they remove stains, they also help restore fabrics to their original whiteness – all without using aggressive detergents. Be sure to try this method!

Did you know that eggshells work as bleach?

Eggshellscontrary to appearances, they are not just kitchen waste. They contain calcium carbonate – a natural chemical compound that acts as a mild bleaching agent. Moreover, their structure and properties make it possible to neutralize fats and effectively remove stains from fabrics.

Delicate materials such as linen or cotton, which are heavily polluted and cannot be treated with an aggressive product, you should therefore treat them with eggshells.

How to prepare eggshells for washing?

In order for eggshells to fulfill their role in washing, they must be properly prepared. But don’t worry it’s very easy and fast.

  • Collect eggshells – collect the eggshells after each use. Make sure they do not contain any protein or membrane residues.
  • Thorough washing – wash the shells under running water to remove any organic residues.
  • Drying – let the shells dry completely. You can dry them in the sun or on a radiator.
  • Grinding – crush the shells into smaller pieces, but do not grind them into a powder. Larger fragments are easier to remove from the washing machine after the washing cycle.

How to use eggshells in the washing machine?

  • It is best to put the finished eggshells in a cotton bag, so that their fragments do not scatter in the washing machine.
  • The bag must be inserted directly into the washing machine drum together with the laundry.
  • Add detergent and set a specific program depending on the type of fabric or drum load.
  • After the wash cycle is complete remove the bag and discard the shells – although it should be remembered that they can find other uses at home.

After using this trick, tablecloths and bed linen are visibly whiter and stubborn stains – even those from grease, red wine or coffee – disappear. Thanks to the gentle action of the shells, the fabrics remain soft and the effect of cleanliness is visible already after the first wash. You again you dispose of organic waste ecologically and you don’t create a lot of problematic waste in your home.
