President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) will meet this Friday (10), starting at 10am, with ministers at Palácio do Planalto to discuss Meta’s decision to end the fact-checking program on social media.

Among the participants is Sidônio Palmeira, appointed by Lula to be the new minister of the Secretariat of Social Communication (Secom) in place of Paulo Pimenta.

Ministers must also participate:

  • Rui Costa (Civil House);
  • Manoel Carlos de Almeida Neto (interim in Justice);
  • Juscelino Filho (Communications);
  • Jorge Messias (Attorney General of the Union);
  • e Vinícius de Carvalho (Comptroller General of the Union).

In a statement on Thursday (9), President Lula considered the announcement made by the platform.

“I think it is extremely serious that people want digital communication to not have the same responsibility as a guy who commits a crime in the written press,” said Lula.

Announcement

Meta is responsible for Instagram, Threads, Facebook and WhatsApp. The company announced, on Tuesday (7), new guidelines to guarantee more “freedom of expression” on social networks. Among the actions is the reduction of filters and content moderation, in addition to the end of checking facts (and misinformation) disseminated by users.

When asked about the matter, Lula defended respect for the national sovereignty of each country and the holding of individuals responsible for actions on social media that violate laws.

“What we really want is for each country to have its sovereignty protected. One citizen cannot, two citizens cannot, three citizens cannot think they can harm the sovereignty of a nation”, he said.

The Federal Public Ministry of São Paulo officiated the Target on Wednesday (8) so that the company can clarify, within 30 days, .

New guidelines

On Thursday, Meta updated its social media policy in the Portuguese version regarding what is considered “hateful conduct”. One of the main changes is that, from now on, users are no longer prevented from making posts that they associate,

The new text, available on Meta’s transparency policies page, points out that it is no longer prohibited to make “allegations of mental illness or abnormality when based on gender or sexual orientation, considering political and religious discourses about transgenderism and homosexuality”.

The company highlighted that it will continue to remove content considered “dehumanizing, allegations of immorality or serious criminality and slander”.
