Putin seeks to compensate the Russians with the annexation of another European territory

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which is about to turn three years oldhas caused not only a high number of casualties on both sides and the blurring of borders, but also doubt about what the final destination of the war will be and what conditions will be reached for it.

In fact, the stalemate in the war seems such that Putin I would be thinking of annexing Belarus in an attempt to divert the attention of its citizens from the unfavorable situation facing their country on the Ukrainian front.

This was defended by Kremlin sources cited by the Russian newspaper Meduza, who stated that the neighboring country represents a “deeper integration of the two States”through the implementation of common institutions, to group together two territories “that disintegrated in the 1990s.”

However, for Putin’s aspirations to be fulfilled, he would need the endorsement of the Belarusian president, Aleksandr Lukashenko, who has already made it clear on more than one occasion that he has no intention of abandoning power or sharing it, but rather of continuing to hold his position as state leader, which it has kept since 1994. In addition, Lukashenko has also stressed that he plans to run again in the next elections that will take place on January 26, 2025.

According to the same sources reported by the Russian newspaper, the population and Russian elite is disappointed due to the course of the conflict, since the economy has been affected and companies have had to suffer sanctions and restrictions that have limited their activity.
