A violent attack on a Landless Workers Movement (MST) settlement in Tremembé, São Paulo, resulted in the death of two people and left five injured on Friday night (10). According to information from the MST, armed men invaded the Olga Benário Settlement, shooting at residents while many of them were sleeping.

The fatal victims were identified as Valdir do Nascimento, aged 52, Denis Carvalho, aged 29, and Gleison Barbosa de Carvalho, aged 28. The five people who were injured, aged between 18 and 49, were quickly taken to hospitals in the region to receive medical care. The seriousness of the situation generated an immediate response from local authorities.

The São Paulo Public Security Secretariat confirmed that the Civil Police are leading the investigations, which were registered as homicide and attempted homicide. A man was detained in the act on charges of illegal possession of a weapon, but there is still no information on the identity of the attackers.

João Paulo Rodrigues, representative of the MST, requested the intervention of the Federal Police so that the investigations can be carried out in a more comprehensive manner. The Minister of Agrarian Development, Paulo Teixeira, also spoke, describing the attack as “a very serious crime” and calling for effective action to clarify the facts. The repercussion of the attack generated reactions from parliamentarians from different parties, who demand a rigorous investigation and accountability for those involved.
