Former president says he was invited directly by the Republican committee; document was seized amid investigations into the alleged coup

The former president (PL) asked this Friday (10.Jan.2025) the release of his passport to the minister of the (Supreme Federal Court) Alexandre de Moraes to attend the inauguration of Donald Trump (Republican Party) as president of the United States.

In the document, to which the Poder360 had access, the defense says that Bolsonaro was invited by the Republican’s event committee to attend the ceremony, which will be held in Washington DC on January 20.

“The petitioner was honored to receive, directly from the Presidential Inaugural Committee, a formal invitation to participate, together with a companion, in the inauguration ceremony of the Honorable President Donald J. Trump for the Presidency of the United States of America”it says.

The passport, which allows the ex-chief executive to leave the country, was seized in 2024 during investigations for an alleged coup attempt.

In November, (Federal Police) Bolsonaro and 36 other people in the case. Moraes, who is the inquiry’s rapporteur, forwarded the report, of around 800 pages, to the PGR (Attorney General’s Office). Now, it is up to the body to decide whether to file a complaint against the former president and the others involved.

With political similarities during their governments, Bolsonaro bet on getting closer to Trump throughout 2024.

The president of Institutional Relations of the PL (Liberal Party) and son of Jair, the federal deputy (PL-SP), followed the counting of the North American elections at Trump’s house, in Mar-a-Lago.

The Republicans, who will have a majority in the Chamber and the Senate, also nod to the Brazilian opposition. Congressmen from the Trumpist wing have advanced agendas that target members of the Brazilian Judiciary under allegations of “censorship” in decisions – a priority topic for Bolsonaro’s allies in Brazil.

A delegation of right-wing deputies and senators from Brazil is also expected to arrive in the North American capital to attend the inauguration of the future president.
