Does not exceed 40 km/h: the expression “cruising speed” can be misleading

Does it mean you are going too fast, or too slow? Or none of the hypotheses? And what is the speed of a real cruise?

We use and hear it many times, whether in conversations or in social communication, the expression “cruising speed”.

From the news, and just taking examples from recent weeks, we can read that a certain person wants to maintain cruising speed after an irregular route; we know that the municipal elections are progressing at cruising speed; or that it went into cruising speed to deal with health problems.

But, after all, what does this expression mean? That they go too fast, too slow?

It depends. In , we see three possibilities: in fact, one of them indicates that it is a “constant high speed”; the other explains that “cruising speed” means that “constant speed, work routine”; and there is still a third possibility, which translates into… “monotony” – for example, when a game takes place without any interest, it looks like training.

In the dictionary, we see two possibilities: something fast, light, fast; but also the “normal progression of the development of an action or activity”.

In other words, in the vast majority of cases, “cruising speed” can describe some process or someone who is going very fast, but it can also mean that you entered a speed constant, “right” – and not necessarily fast. In principle, in both scenarios, something is going well.

But, after all, How fast does a… cruise actually go?

Well, you might be surprised: ZAP managed to discover, from a regular traveler on cruises around the world, that on these trips the maximum speed is… 40 km/h. “And if everything goes well.”
