A settlement of the (Landless Rural Workers Movement) in Tremembé (SP) was the target of an attack on Friday night (10) that left two dead and six injured, two of which are in serious condition, according to the Ministry of Development Agrarian (MDA).
In a statement, the movement stated that armed people invaded the Olga Benário settlement at around 11pm in cars and motorcycles and started shooting at residents, including children and the elderly.
Eight people were hit by gunfire, according to the MST and the ministry, including the two who succumbed to their injuries. Two of the injured are in serious condition.
In a note, the MDA says that Minister Paulo Teixeira contacted the Federal Police and authorities from the Tarcísio de Freitas (Republican) government to ask for action and punishment for the crime, which he classified as barbaric.
“I spoke to the secretaries [estaduais de São Paulo] Guilherme Derrite, Gilberto Kassab, with delegate Osvaldo Nico Gonçalves and also with the director general of the Federal Police, Andrei Rodrigues”, reported the minister, according to the note.
“The MDA repudiates the crime and expresses solidarity and support for the settlers, especially the families of Valdir do Nascimento and the young Gleison Barbosa Carvalho, brutally murdered in this case”, states the ministry.
In a statement, the MST said that it “is outraged by the violence and the lack of public security policies in the territories, which put the lives of so many at constant risk.”
