The offensive by Congress against it is directly related to violent attacks committed against the group, assesses federal deputy João Daniel (PT-SE), former coordinator of the MST in Sergipe.

For João Daniel, the initiatives give strength to attacks against the group. “This action by Congress is directly related to a type of discourse supporting the criminalization of the movement that fights for and full support for the violence committed”, he states.
“This is an open encouragement to violence, to murder in the countryside. It is absurd. The attack on the Olga Benário camp needs to be investigated and it needs to be criminalized based on hate speech and support for this type of action.”
He stated that President Lula (PT) contacted members of the movement in São Paulo, making Minister Macaé Evaristo (Human Rights) available to support the case. “We expect exactly that, that the minimum amount of justice will be done through the investigation and exemplary punishment of those who committed this crime.”
