Month sees debut of young tennis player João Fonseca in Grand Slam tournaments and start of state tournaments

An 18-year-old young man is one of the highlights of the 2025 sports calendar for Brazilians. Born in Rio, the tennis player will make his debut in Grand Slam tournaments – the main tennis tournaments.

After passing through qualifyingFonseca won a place in the main draw of the Australian Open, held in Melbourne. He will face the Russian, number 9 tennis player in the rankings, starting at midnight, early in the morning on Sunday (12 January 2025).

No. 113 in the world (according to the ranking of January 6), Fonseca is going through a great moment. In the last 30 days, he won the titles of , in Saudi Arabia, and , in Australia.

Although it is common for tennis players who come from qualifying facing top 10 athletes straight away in the 1st round, it’s not an easy debut for Fonseca. If he passes, he could face the Swiss Stan Wawrinka, champion of the Australian Open in 2014 – if he defeats the Italian Lorenzo Sonego.

Another 3 Brazilian tennis players will also compete in the Australian Open in singles:

  • Thiago Wild – faces Fabian Marozsan, from Hungary;
  • Thiago Monteiro – faces Kei Nishikori, from Japan, from 10pm on January 11, 2025 (Brasília time);
  • Bia Haddad Maia – faces Julia Rivera, from Argentina.

FOOTBALL SPORTS CALENDAR

In the most popular sport among Brazilians, the month of January marks the beginning of the state championships (read the dates of the 1st round of the main competitions). And on the 25th, the anniversary of the city of São Paulo, the final of the São Paulo Junior Football Cup takes place.
