American singer who was part of the duo Sam & Dave, died this Friday (10), aged 89. The artist’s press officer informed The Guardian that it happened due to complications from an event held in Coral Gables, Florida. Moore enjoyed great success in the 1960s with hits such as Soul Man and Hold On, I’m Comin’ alongside Dave Prater (1937-1988). The duo, considered legendary for American soul music, influenced artists such as Michael Jackson and Al Green.
In 1968, after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., the duo performed at the memorial concert in honor of the activist, at Madison Square Garden, in New York. Years later, in 1992, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame by Billy Joel. Moore grew up in Miami and began singing in church. He met Dave Prater at a concert hall in the city and the two formed the duo, which separated in 1970. Prater died in 1988, after being involved in a car accident.
After Prater’s split, Moore attempted to release a solo album, but was hampered by drug addiction, from which he recovered in the early 1980s. He later appeared on two Bruce Springsteen albums: 1992’s Human Touch and Only the Strong Survive, from 2023. In 2006, Moore finally released his solo album, Overnight Sensational, which featured names like Jon Bon Jovi, Mariah Carey and Eric Clapton. In the last years of his life, he became an activist for artists’ rights and, in 2019, he received the Lifetime Achievement award, the highest honor from the Recording Academy, responsible for the Grammys.
