Multimillionaire Elon Musk warned about the possibility of a global energy crisis this year. The businessman, known for his leadership in technology, drew attention to the impacts of the rapid expansion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and electric vehicles (EV). During a speech at the ‘Bosch Connected World’ conference, Musk highlighted the growing demand for electricity and the urgent need to focus efforts on the production of clean energy and electrical transformers, essential components to sustain the planet’s technological future.
According to Musk, Artificial Intelligence is evolving at an exponential rate, predicting that its growth will multiply by 10 every six months. According to her, he stated that this rate of progress is not sustainable in the long term, highlighting: “I have never seen a faster technological advance than this.” The businessman, quoted by the ‘EasternEye’ platform, warned that although the chip shortage appears to have been overcome, the development of AI and electric vehicles could lead to cuts in the supply of electricity and transformers in the near future.
Faced with this growing consumption of electricity, Elon Musk suggested that humanity’s biggest challenge in the near future could be the “availability of electricity”. According to the businessman, shortages could occur later this year, fueled by the simultaneous increase in these two technologies. “You need transformers to make transformers work,” he said, emphasizing the complex interdependence between technology and its supporting infrastructure.
This warning comes at a time when the United States is already facing considerable challenges to its electrical grid. The rapid increase in demand, driven by the growth of data centers, Artificial Intelligence and cryptocurrency mining, is testing the capacity of existing energy infrastructure.
